English Only vs Bilingual Classroom According to the article, The Practice of Policy, research has stated that a learner’s first language is an important aspect of cognitive, communicative, and social functions when communicating in a foreign and second language classroom (McMillan & Rivers 2010). This article covers a survey that was done that includes twenty-nine native English speaker teachers at a university in Japan. The native English speakers were required to use the target language that is a key detail of the foreign language learning environment. Researchers believe that the first language can be beneficial in enhancing a second language learning and the learner’s emerging bilingualism. In Japan, it is suspected that the student’s first language is a barrier when it comes to effective instruction. Due to this belief, the Japanese created an English-only approach in hopes of being able to avoid student’s first language and keeping a direct teaching method. An English-only classroom requires a significance in learning how to communicate when using the target language. This article provided a study that was completed to obtain an in-depth analysis of first and second languages. Twenty-nine participants were selected for this study, several teachers viewed L1 use positively or negatively.
