A painter may use brush, paint, and canvas to paint, however there are several kinds of brushes and types of paint as well as many methods of painting that are used to bring a painting to life. Sculptors may all start with a lump of clay, rock, wood or other shapeless element, however they also use a vast array of tools and techniques to sculpt and mold their art. Likewise, a writer implores countless styles that shape their effort into the story they are attempting to tell. In her novel Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte most skillfully employs many writing methods to bring her story to light, however it is her clever use of the symbolism that give dimension and depth to this gothic romance.
Wuthering Heights written by Emily Bronte in 1847 is a love story set in the English countryside, spanning over a thirty year period from 1771 to 1803, which is rich with symbolism. Symbolism in literature is the use of symbols to suggest ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. For example, a writer might infuse the colors white and black in a description of a setting, however in addition to relating the actual setting, the colors are meant to symbolize good and evil. Symbols may also shift their meanings depending on the context they are used in.
