Half the coral in the Northern barrier sea are dead due to coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is “When corals are stressed by changes in conditions such as temperature, light, or nutrients, they expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn completely white”. Now most people may think nothing of that fact. But the reason the coral died due to turning white is to due to the algae leaving the coral’s tissue. The coral and the algae have a “symbiotic relationship with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae that live in their tissues. These algae are the coral’s primary food source and give them their color” (What). When the algae leave the coral, the coral is left vulnerable and if left that way long enough, the coral will eventually die.
The main factor of the huge coral bleaching are humans. Due to us causing global warming and pollution, we have caused the change of environment for the coral population.
It may not sound so but, the health of coral also impact the economy. Coral tend to make a city of sorts and form a coral reef. A coral reef act as a home of sorts for other specimen. The healthy coral reefs contribute to the economy by attracting tourists to go diving, go on fishing tours, and having hotels near the ocean to go see the coral reefs. But most importantly the coral reefs provide recreational fishing areas. In developing countries this is an essential area as they “contribute about one-quarter of the total fish catch, providing…
