The Nickel Boys is written by Colson Whitehead, who depicts an incredible and resilient story on the treatment of African American youth during the Civil Rights movement. The story is based on a young African American boy named Elwood, a young man living in Florida who was wrongfully arrested while trying to attend a class at a university and then being sent to Nickel Academy which was a reform school for boys. In the academy, the young African American males were targeted and abused to the teachers liking. I define value and relevance based on events that happen in the text and if there are problems of that sort. There were repeated cycles of violence shown throughout the book where students would get into altercations and in the end both end up beaten repeatedly by the teachers to show a way of forceful discipline. Whitehead also wrote about how Elwood and other boys would be taken to the “The Ice Cream Factory” which was a white building where the boys would get whipped. This shows the violence African American boys were facing due to the oppression and racism during the Civil Rights movement as they were being taken and beaten whenever the teachers pleased. This is relevant to high school students because it talks about the historical events that led to the laws enforced now and the equality between people, which makes the text valuable due to its historical significance.
