ALEC is the American Legislative Exchange Council. A private club made up of members of politicians and corporations (Google, Walmart, Microsoft, etc.). They are responsible for writing laws and giving them to Republicans. In meetings, members propose laws or policies to their political counterparts, whose majority are Republicans. Corporate lobbyists secretly vote as equals with lawmakers on bills that the lawmakers introduced in the states. Bill Clinton's laws discussed in the previous paragraph were all proposed by ALEC, as well as the controversial “Stand Your Ground Law." This law was responsible for not convicting George Zimmerman in the murder of a black 17-year-old teenager, Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman willingly went up and caused a scuffle with Martin because he looked “suspicious” and then fatally shot him when Martin began to fight back. Another corporation that works hand in hand with ALEC is the CCA, or Corrections Corporation of America, or, in other words, a correctional system that makes prisons. ALEC and the CCA cooperate by pushing forward several policies that increase the number of people who get arrested, which in turn leads them to arrive in a CCA-run prison. Through ALEC, CCA makes federal inmates make products for ALEC-run corporations; as a result, CCA receives profit from it. ALEC and the CCA uphold a political structure of racial hierarchy by implementing laws and policies where black people are put easily in prison systems and engage in labor for corporations while receiving little to no profit for it (DuVernay). Fourthly, intersectionality refers to an individual being impacted by their race, gender, class, and sexuality, all of which contribute to their place in society. 13. Examines how race intersects with the criminal justice system, incarceration, and criminalization of black Americans. The documentary demonstrates and highlights how black people are treated
