Charles Perrault's “Blue Beard” :

The story “Blue Beard” by Charles Pearrult discusses topics such as toxic masculinity, violence, rejection, and manipulation against women. In the passage given, the scene describes Bluebeard’s wife discovering the truth about what her husband is really hiding. After she has received his trust, she is given a key to the room no one is allowed to enter. Since she is curious, the wife unlocks the door only to find multiple women brutally murdered.

Bluebeard tends to have issues within romantic relationships, and seemingly all of his previous wives died due to unforeseen circumstances. This portrays the character as someone you may need to sympathize with since life is seemingly cruel to him. In the passage, it is shown that Bluebeard is completely okay with giving his wife access to his belongings, but threatens her if she enters the forbidden room. This is a great example of the manipulation techniques the husband has for his wife and the reader. The wife is tricked into thinking that this man is a good person with no harmful traits; someone you would want to marry, and the reader is able to sympathize with him and the struggles he goes through in life. When the wife begins to get curious about this room, she disobeys him in the worst way possible by unlocking the door.
