Breaking Free
In the play, Fences by August Wilson two of the main character Troy and Bono are prime example of African American living their life to their abilities. While troy is more of outspoken and strict character and bono is more of the quiet, friendly character. The two man share many similarities, including how both these men made a life they are proud of while providing for their families. After their struggles, they face since they were little, these two character had to overcome challenges with the negative stereotypes of being African American.

Troy is a hard worker, who works at a garbage dump were the white employees get the easy jobs by being the drivers and the black employees have to do all the hard labor by lifting all the trash into the trucks. Troy is the father to Cory, Lyons and, Raynell. Troy is portrayed as a hard ass but he is making sure his family become the best they can be. Troy insist everyone in his family live a realistic life. He demands respect from his children by calling himself Sir. Troy said to Cory “Nigger as long as you in my house, you put that sir on the end of it when you talk to me” (Wilson 1.3). Troy and his son Cory share an interest in sports. Cory wants to play football and wants to go to college but Troy shot that idea down because blacks don’t get to play sports. Troy used to play baseball on a black league when he went to jail for killing a man but never made it to pro because of racial discrimination. The two pals first met as young men in prison. They also both work at the garbage dump together. Bono has a wife name Lucille who he loves dearly. Bono has no children. Like Troy, Bono didn’t come from a happy family either. Bono father never provided for his family. Bono describe his father searching for the New Land, “See a fellow moving around from place to place… woman to woman…called it searching out the New land” (Wilson 1.4). Bono didn’t have any kids because he didn’t know if he will be in one place long enough just like his daddy. Bono is known as Troy’s sidekick and doesn’t get much of his words in when they hang out so he usually just agrees and nods. Towards the end of the play we hear Bono voice when Bono warns Troy to stop having an affair with Alberta before you lose Rose. Bono looks up to Troy as a role model and doesn’t want to see Troy or Rose to get hurt, “you have taught me a lot of thing, you showed me how to not make the same mistakes…to take life as it comes along” (Wilson 1.4).
