Opportunity for the Homeless They are in every large city of the United States. Sometimes at parks, others on the street corners. They are homeless people, and they do not have anywhere to go. They are alone, suffering from cold and hunger. The dollars they may receive are not enough for them to survive. Many people believe that government social programs for people, such as these, only build dependency on the programs. However, many homeless people have mental health issues and other disabilities that make it difficult for them to stay employed or otherwise provide for themselves. The government cannot keep ignoring the reality of homelessness. The programs in place are not adequate, and any dependency issues are a secondary concern. Thus, the government should increase the funding for programs that help the homeless and ensure that they have basic shelter. The number of people who are likely to become homeless is increasing. “On any given day, 900,000 people—including 200,000 children—go to sleep homeless” (Merrifield). In addition, according to Christine Vestal, cities such as; Hawaii, Sacramento, Phoenix, and Portland are witnessing a significant increase in homelessness. “As many as 3.4 million Americans are likely to experience homelessness this year [2009] —a 35 percent increase since the recession started in December 2007—” (Vestal).
