The arrows on a food chain show ?
The flow of energy from producer to consumers

The process plants use to make food is called ?
Photosynthesis

Where does all energy in food chains come from?
The sun

What must all food chains start with?
The sun followed by a producer.

What is a producer?
A plant that can produce it's own food using energy from the sun.

What is a consumer?
Animals that cannot make their own food so must eat plants/other animals to get the energy and nutrients they need.

What is a decomposer?
Organisms (plants/animals) such as bacteria and fungi that get the energy they need by breaking down dead matter(e.g. dead animals) and waste product (poo).

Partners for mating, animals/plants to eat, animals to compete with for food are all examples of what kind of factors that impact on the needs of living things?
Biotic Factors
Living factors that affect where an organism lives.
Light, wind, soil, temperature, flood, fire are all examples of what kind of factors that impact on living things?
Abiotic Factors
Non-Living factors that affect where an organism lives.
What are adaptations?
Characteristics (Features) that help an organism to survive in their environment.
Example: Polar Bears have thick white coats to survive in the Artic.
Camels developing humps to store fat to survive lack of water in desert.
The oxpecker (bird) eats ticks off zebras. This gives the bird food and stops the zebra getting sick from the tick. Is this an example of parasitism, commensalism, mutualism, competition?
Mutualism: Where two organisms interact. Both benefit (gain) from the interaction and neither are harmed.
Another example of this kind of relationship would be bees and flowers. Bees use the nectar from flowers for food and flowers need bees to pollenate them. Both the bee and the flower get something positive from the relationship.
Scientists who study living things are often called Biologists, but what name is given to scientists who specialise in grouping/naming living things?
Taxonomists

If two animals live in the same area and eat the same food, they are said to be ?
competitors

Heartworms can live in a dog's heart and uses it for food and shelter. This can leave to illness or death for the dog. This relationship is known as?
Parasitism

What is a dichotomous key?
A series of choices that you can use to identify an object, animal or plant.

Which of the following is NOT a good example of a key for identifying a particular type of cat?
a) Pointy ears
b) Short-haired coat
c) large paws
d) Blue eyes

c) Large paws - Strong keys must be easy to observe/not open to interpretation.
Short hair, pointy ears, blue eyes are all easy to observe and won't change over time, but my idea of large may be different to yours so this is NOT a good key.

What are the Levels of Classification for animals?
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
Keep Placing Cake Orders For Good Students
True or False - Organisms within a Kingdom are all similar?
False - Kingdom is the first level of classification so includes many different organisms.

True or False - Class is a group within Family?
False - Family is further down the levels of classification than Class so Family is actually a group within a Class.

True or False - There are more different organisms in a Class than a Genus?
True - As you go down the levels of classification, there are less animals/plants in each group and they are more alike.

What is a habitat?
The place where an animal or plant lives.

What is an ecosystem?
A system of organisms that interact with each other and their non-living environment.

Which of the following human activities would not interfere with the food web in a river?
a) Overfishing of trout (fish)
b) Introducing a new species of frog
c) Clearing bushland on the river's edge to create picnic/camping grounds
d) Observing/counting the birdlife that feeds from the river
d) Observing/counting the birdlife that feeds from the river
Any activity that reduces a particular type of animal/plant, introduces a new animal/plant or changes the environment could interfere with the food webs.
In this food web, record one food chain that includes rabbits.
