Xylem

•made of xylem vessels

Xylem vessels are joined end to end to form continuous tube with no end walls

No cytoplasm because they’re dead

Cell walls are thickened with lignin for support. They can be deposited into the walls in different patterns

Amount of lignin increases as plants get older

Minerals and water move in and out of vessels through pits

Phloem

Transports solutes e.g sucrose

Phloem contain sieve tube elements, phloem fibres and companion cells

Sieve tube elements have no nucleus and lack organelles. They’re joined end to end with sieve like end walls

Companion cells carry out living functions for sieve tube elements and them selfs such providing atp for active transport
