Describe the Champage region climate and grape growing.

Champagne has a cool continental climate where growers must contend with winter freeze, spring frosts, and rainy, cloudy weather. In the warmest years, grape sugar levels remain very low and acid levels very high.


Most of the vineyards are on slopes.


Soils are dominated by chalk, which provides good drainage after rain storms, but retains sufficient ester.
