Viticulture Grape Varieties and Winemaking

- considered as part of Burgundy, but it has different soil, grape varieties, climate, style ...
- Main garpe variety is Gamay which wines are fragrant with flavours of raspberry and cherry and very light tannins.
- these characteristics are enhanced by the vinification technique and carbonic maceracion.
- Gamay gives best results on granite soils.

Beaujolais Appellations
Beaujolais and Beaujolais Nouveau
- Beaujolais is wine making only for early drinking (young wine),
*Beaujolais AC - is made by carbonic maceration
- Beaujolais cannot be relised to consumers after the midnight of third Wednesday in November, that is morning of third Thursday.
- Beaujolais cannot be sold by grower or mechant after the following 31 August.
*Beaujolais Primeur may be same wine as Beaujolais Nouveau but may not be sold after 31 January following the vintage.
- Primeur and Nouveau can only be Beaujolais or Beaujolais Villages quality.
- The ten crus cannot be sold in this way.
Beaujolais villages and the Beaujolais Crus
- on NW or region are granitic schist soil important for Gamay wines character.
- 39 villages can use name Beaujolasi Village, it is common to blend wines between villages.
- 10 Beaujolais Crus are: Saint Amour AC, Julienas AC, Chenas AC, Moulin-a-Vent AC, Chiroubles AC, Fleurie AC, Morgon AC, Regnie AC, Cote de Brouilly AC and Brouilly AC.
- Moulin-a-Vent and Morgon are more powerfull and full bodied and will improve in the bottle.
- Broully is most widely available and highest production.
