Brainstorming
Thinking of ideas for writing. Also called prewriting or planning.
Draft
Putting your ideas into sentences and paragraphs.
Revising
Adding details, organizing, and clarifying your writing.
Sentence
A complete idea with a subject and predicate. For example: The dog chased the cat through the house.
Fragment
In incomplete idea expressed in writing. For example: "The big dog is," or "red popsicles."
Editing
Checking your writing using CUPS. Also called proofreading.

Plan
Used to organize your ideas for writing. There are many different plans to use.
Paragraph
A group of 5 to 8 sentences with a topic sentence, details, explanations, transition words, and a conclusion sentence.
Topic Sentence
The first sentence of a paragraph. It lets your reader know what your paragraph is about.
Transition words
Words that signal to your reader that you are introducing a new idea. For example, "first," "second," "next," "then," and "finally."
Conclusion sentence
The last sentence in the paragraph. It wraps up all the information you wrote about.
