Geography as it relates to history

China could not trade as much because they were more secluded. Mesopotamia traded more because they had access to the fertile crescent


How rivers effected the development of early civilization

Land was more fertile and they were able to move and trade things easily when utilizing the river

Social classes in ancient civilization

1) priests, nobles and warriors.

Hammurabi did not actually write the laws himself, he only collected them.

The laws limited personal vengeance and encouraged social order/ stability

Deals with offenses against others such as burglary, assault or murder. "An eye for an eye, a life for a life"

Deals with private matters such as business, contracts, taxes, marriage, divorce and property inheritance.

Invaders conquered Nile region, Persians

Bankruptcy from pyramids, power struggles, crop failures

Egypt (Middle Kingdom)

corruption, rebellion, Hyksos invaded region

Egypt (New Kingdom)

Ramses II left no leader to take his place. Egyptians and Hittites fought, after decline, a treaty was signed.

India

Volcanic eruption, too many trees cut down, Arryus overran Indus region

China

Shang dynasty overthrown by Zhou: took over and changed laws.

Dynastic Cycle

Rise and fall of dynasties, explained by mandate of heaven.

Mandate of Heaven

new dynasty → aging dynasty → becomes corrupt → dynasty loses the mandate of heaven → this is shown through natural disasters (ie. floods and invasions) → new dynasty takes over

Ziggurats

Temples built to worship gods, tried to make gods happy because they were viewed as dark and angry.
