Nautical Revolution

- Small, highly maneuverable sailing ship.

- Developed in the 15th century by the Portuguese to explore along the West African coast and into the Atlantic Ocean.

- Developed based on existing fishing boats under the sponsorship of Prince Henry the Navigator.

- Soon became the preferred vessel for Portuguese explorers.

- Its economy, speed, agility, and power made it esteemed as the best sailing vessel of its time. The limited capacity for cargo and crew were their main drawbacks, but did not hinder its success.
Grand Canal
- Designed to link the original centers of Chinese civilization on the North China plain with the Yangtze River Basin more than 500 miles to the South.

- Necessary to improve communications between N & S due to increase in Chinese population in the S. regions.

- Made it possible to transport the capital revenue collected in the form of grain.

- The North was threatened by drought & famine before the Grand Canal was created.
Ibn Battuta
- Arab traveler who described African societies and cultures in his travel records.

- "Of all people, the blacks are those who most hate injustice, and their emperor pardons none who is guilty of it."
Syncretism
- The combination of cultural elements, commonly as a result of significant contact between cultures.

- For example, a statue sculpted by an Indian artist that depicts the beloved Buddha clothed in Greek fashions.
