Baddeley & Hitch argued

STM is not a single system but that it is comprised of several memory systems.

Components to the WMM

1. Central Executive

2. The Phonological Loop

3. The Visuo- Spatial Sketchpad.

1. Central Executive

Monitors and co-ordinates the systems (slaves systems) in the WM. Involved in decision making and planning.

May give priority to one task while inhibiting the other. EG someone may pay less attention to the tv whilst someone is telling them something.

2. The phonological loop

Deals with auditory information.

TWO PARTS:

1. phonological slave 'INNER EAR' : holds words that have been heard

2. articulatory process 'INNER VOICE' : silently repeats words in the phonological store.

3. The visuo- spatial sketchpad

Stores visual and spatial information.

Deals with information in a visual code e.g, size, colour, shape etc 'INNER EYE'

important for games- TENNIS or FOOTBALL.

Study on WMM

Baddeley et al

Method?

tracing the letter F, saying if the angle included the top or bottom line of the letter [ to which they would respond 'yes' or 'no ] WHILST tracking a moving light with a pointer.

Difficulties?

Participants had trouble classifying the angles whilst performing the pointer task.

Conclusion?

imagery and pointer task used VSP whereas pointer task and verbal task used differen systems hence why the latter task was easier.
