Elements

Consist of only one type of atom. Cannot be made any simpler. Can exist as either atoms or molecules.

Compounds

Consists of atoms of two or more different elements bound together. Can be broken down into simpler matter by chemical means.

Mixtures

Consist of two or more different elements and/or compounds physically intermingled. Can be seperate into its components by physical means.

Physical change

Is a change in substance’s physical properties, such as size, shape or state of matter.

Changes of state are common

Liquid to gas, gas to solid etc.

E.g sliced apple, crushed can they’re still the same only look different.

Chemical change

One or more new substances are formed. Typical signs are:

Change in colour

Change in temperature

Production of light or sound

Formation of a new substance.

Formation of gas

The periodic table

It is used to list all the known elements from smallest to largest. It uses internationally recognised symbols, and is ordered in the physical and chemical properties of the elements.

Metals

Commonly used for jewellery, construction and electronics. Their properties are ductile, malleable, conductible and lustre.

Non metals

Are non conductible, dull and brittle.

Common compounds

H2O is water

CO is carbon monoxide

HCl is hydrogen chloride.

Reactant

The old substances in a chemical reaction

Product

The new substance that forms after the chemical reaction

Chemical reaction

The process of rearranging atoms to form new substances, is known as a chemical reaction.
