Dadaism

An expressionist movement exploring political perspectives and illustrating the discontent of many Germans. The underlying feelings of people at the extremes of the political system. Contested views on social class, the war and prostitution evident daily in Germany.

Dawes plan

Reduced the burden of war reparations which allowed Germany to borrow money. France also agreed to finally leave the Ruhr.

Locarno treaty

Signed in 1925, renounced the use of war in the future. Germany lost nothing by signing this treaty despite protests from the right wing groups who condemned the treaty. It marked a new beginning in European relations for the first time since the war Germany was treated as an equal and there was a new spirit of reconciliation in the air.

The young plan

The young plan followed the earlier works of the Dawes plan and set out to revise the reparations issue. The young plan reduced the final reparations figure from 123000 million marks to 37000 million marks with an arrangement it be paid in annual instalments to the year 1988. Although reparations were cancelled altogether in 1929 during the Great Depression.

Kampfbund

The fighting league. An organisation of right wing military groups in Barvaria set up in 1923. Members of the kampfbund took part in the unsuccessful Munich beer hall putsch in 1923

Freikorps

Military units formed in 1918. Mainly consisting of ex-soldiers. They were opposed to the extremists of the left and were used to crush the spartacist uprising in 1919.

Proportional representation

The process by which each party gains in correlating seats to the number of votes received in the election. Therefore 30% of national vote would equate to 30% of seats in the reichstag.
