Atmosphere

The gaseous envelope surrounding the earth

Troposhere

The lowest layer of the atmosphere

Altitude

The height of anything above a given planetary reference plane

Ozone

A form of oxygen

Stratosphere

The upper layer upward from the troposphere to about 30 miles

Water cycle

It passes into the atmosphere as water vapor

Evaporation

The act or process of evaporating

Condition

A particular mode of being of a person or thing

Radiation

The heat from the sun comes down on earth

Convection

THE transfer of heat by the circulation or movement of the heated parts of a liquid or gas

Condensation

The act of condensing

Local winds-land and sea breezes

Sea breeze-a thermally produced wind blowing from a cool ocean surface onto adjoining warm land

Land breeze-a coastal breeze blowing at night from land to sea

Global winds

From pole to equator, they are the polar easterlies, the westerlies, and the trade winds

Air masses

A body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure

Weather

Rain,hail,storms,etc.....

Wind

The perceptible natural movement of the air

Coriolis effect

An effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force

Surface ocean currents

The movement of water due to differences in density as a function of water temperature and salinity is called thermohaline circulation

Climate

The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period

Which layer of the atmosphere does weather occur?

The troposphere

Explain convection, conduction, radiation and use examples

Convection- the transfer of heat by the circulation or movement of the heated parts of a liquid or gas. Ex. Hot coco

Conduction- a particular mode of being of a person or thing. Ex. Birds under a bright light.

Radiation- the heat from the sun comes down to earth. Ex. Steam on the ground from the sun.

Why does hot air rise and cold air sink?

Hot air rises because the air pressure is low

Cold air sinks because the air pressure high

Compare condensation and evaporation.

They both involve water

Explain how the sun's energy causes the wind to blow.

The winds move from the suns energy because when the sun shines on the clouds that move.

How does the gulf stream current affect the climate of north east coastal cities?

By bringing warm water to other places

What provides energy for the water cycle?

The sun

Why does the San Francisco city on the west coast have cool summers and many foggy days?

Because when summer that part of the earth does not get as much sun as the other places that have summer.
