Weather
The state of the atmosphere at a place and time.
Climate
The average conditions in an area in general or over a long period of time.
Atmosphere
The envelope of gases surrounding the planet.
Atmospheric pressure
The pressure exerted by the weight of the atmosphere.
Barometer
A device to measure atmospheric pressure esp. used in forecasting weather.
Dew Point
The atmospheric temperature in which water droplets can condense and dew can form.
Fog
Fog is the result of the condensation of water vapor in the air (like clouds). The difference is fog is closer to the ground and how in forms.
Ozone
Ozone is a colorless, odorless gas that is found in the earths stratosphere , where it absorbs the suns harmful rays.
Energy budget
An energy budget is the need to balance the energy the earth uses.
Coriolis effect
The effect on a object moving on the earth do to the earths rotation that causes objects to move right in the northern hemisphere and left in the southern hemisphere.
ITCZ
The Intertropical Convergence Zone, know to sailors as doldrums, is the area encircling the earth near the equator where the northeast and southeast trade winds come together.
Jetstream
A narrow, variable band of strong, westerly air currents encircling the globe several miles above the earth. There are typically two or three jet streams in each of the northern and southern hemispheres.
Isobars
A line on a map connecting points having the same atmospheric pressure at a given time or on southern hemispheres.
Cloud
Collections of small water droplets or ice crystals the fall slowly through the air.
Condensation nuclei
The suspended particles that provide the surfaces necessary for water vapor to condense.
Air mass
A body of air with horizontally uniform temperature, humidity, and pressure.
High Pressure
A condition of the atmosphere in which the pressure is above average.
Low Pressure
A condition of the atmosphere in which the pressure is above average.
Cold Front
The boundary of an advancing mass of cold air.
Warm Front
The boundary of an advancing mass of cold air.
Stationary Front
A stationary front is a boundary between two different air masses, neither which is strong enough to replace the other.
Occlusion
A process in which the cold front of a rotating low-pressure system overtakes the warm front, forcing the warm air upward a wedge of cold air.
Occluded Front
A composite front produced by occlusion
