Medium

Substance through which the wave moves

Wave pulse

A small part of a wave (crest or trough) that can be produced by a sudden displacement of a medium from its equilibrium position

Equilibrium

Undisturbed surface of a medium

Crest

A rise in medium above equilibrium

Trough

Points of the wave lower than equilibrium

Amplitude

Magnitude of greatest displacement from equilibrium

Wave length

Distance between two successive crests or troughs

Wave front

Leading edge of a wave

Incident wave

A wave front moving out from the point of origin toward a barrier

Reflected wave

A wave front moving away from the barrier

Mechanical wave (simply wave)

Waves that require a medium in which to travel

Transverse wave

Moves perpendicular to the medium in which it travels

Longitudinal waves

Wave that moves parallel to the medium

Rarefractions

Areas where the components of a medium are further apart than in equilibrium position

Compressions

Areas where the components of a medium are closer together than in equilibrium position

Rays

Lines indicating only the direction of motion of the wave front at any point where the ray and the wave front intersect

Diverging rays

Rays that spread out as they move away from the origin

Oscillation

One complete oscillation is called a cycle

Period (T)

The time required for one complete oscillation
