Montserrat is above a destructive plate margin. North America plate is being forced under the caribbean plate.



Magma rose through weak point under the hills forming underground pools of magma. Rock above collapsed opening a vent

Primary impacts

Large areas covered in volcanic material. Capital city Plymouth was buried under 12m of ash and mud.



20 villages and 2/3 of homes destroyed by pyroclastic flows.



Schools,hospitals,airports and ports destroyed.



Vegetation and farms destroyed

Fires destroyed government offices, police stations and petrol stations



Tourists stayed away declining the economy
