Who are the actors in the criminal justice drama and what are their roles?
•Offender- role is not to get caught and avoid conviction
•Victim- as an accuser and possible as witness
•Police-collect and asses evidence and to identify and apprehend the offender
•Prosecutor- asses the evidence and the victims credibility- use the victim to convict
•defense attorney- represent best interest of the defendant and try to acquit
•judge- primary role is to be sure that the defendants rights are protected at all times
What do victims expect of the police?
to have a rapid response, address emotional needs, have a full investigation, and want the offender to be caught.
What do victims expect of the prosecutor?
want to be believed (which is the main conflict), to be an important part of the case, don’t want to feel discarded when no longer needed, respected as valuable, wants to feel the prosecutor on their side.

VIS is the victim impact statement, the ability for the victim to state how the crime had affected their life.

VSO- victims statement opinion- victims recommendation for sentencing, Illinois doesn’t have VSO
What recommendations did the President's Task Force on Victim's of Crime make for judges?
Trained to be sensitive to victims needs, should be on call, allow victims impact statement

-Restitution- Condition attached to sentence that requires the offender to pay victim a sum of money.
-Compensation- process whereby all parties come together to resolve collectively how to deal with the aftermath of the offense “restore things prior to the crime”

by pushing congress and the system to outlaw the 48 hour wait and required rapid response and investigation. they also helped enforce amber alerts
the criteria for an amber alert are: must be under 16 or have a disability and must believe the child is in serious danger
