why is the study of crime useful?

3 basic stages the victim goes through
Impact Stage-shock, anger, anxiety, denial, vulnerability, depression
Intermediate Stage- fear of being alone, nightmares, flash backs, mood swings, guilt of not fighting back
Long Term/Violent Crime- depression, low self-esteem
What are four differences between NCVS and the UCR?
1. UCR counts murders which NCVS does not.

2. UCR calculates over all proportion of index crime cases that are solved by law enforcement agencies.

3. NCVS only counts residential crime not commercial

4. UCR only tracks rape against women and girls; NCVS counts sexual assault against males and females.
4 myths about rape
1.) women are quick to cry rape
2.) Rape is a sexual crime resulting in sexual desire. If women contributed to desire, then it’s her fault.
3.) if a women first agrees and half way thru the party it’s ok for the guy to continue (no means no)
4.) her word against his ; easy for a man to be charged
