What is ventilation?

Ventilation is the planned and systematic removal of smoke, heat and super heated gases and replacement with cooler, cleaner air.

What are the four types of ventilation?

1. Natural ventilation. Eg: opening windows and doors.


2. Manual ventilation. Eg: breaking down walls and doors.


3. Mechanical ventilation. Eg: using a PPV fan to create positive or negative pressure.


4. Hydraulic ventilation. Eg: using hose streams to push smoke through windows.

What is salvage?

Salvage is the prevention or reduction of damage from indirect causes such as heat, smoke, water, debris, breakage and dust.

What are the three stages of salvage?

1. Preventative

Preventative salvage takes place simultaneously with firefighting to reduce avoidable damage.


Eg: causing as little damage as possible during forced entry, using minimal water, ventilating as early as possible.
