Validity

Whether a psychological test experiment observation produces a legitimate result. Also refers to whether results can be generalised

Internal validity

Whether effects observed are due to the manipulation of the independent variable

External validity- ecological validity

Generalising findings from one setting to another. Just because it is in a lab doesnt mean it lacks ecological validity...only if task lacks mundane realism

Temporal validity

Do findings hold true over time.

Assessment of validity

Face validity- on the face of it does it measure what it is supposed to...can fo this just by looking at something

Concurrent validity- this is where results are similar to that of a recognised well established test..eg..IQ

Improving validity of experimental research

-Use control groups...can see if dependent variable is changing because of independent variable

- single blind and double blind procedures...reduce demand characteristics

Improving validity of questionnaires

Assure results are anonymous and put a lie scale in to stop social desirability bias

Improving validity of observations

Covert observations so dont know being watched....behavioural categories are not too broad

Improving validity of qualitative methods

Case studies and interviews. Use direct quotes. Use triangulation use lots of sources
