Internal Validity - General

Where the study really is testing what it says it is.

Assessing Internal Validity

Face validity- the study of measure is scrutinized to see if on the surface its an accurate reflection.

Improving internal validity

Look at the questions that are performing inconsistently and change them then do the split half again

External Validity

The extent to which the findings of research can be generalized across people, places or time

Population validity

The extent to which the research findings can be generalised to the target population and to other people

Temporal Validity

The extent to which the research findings can be generalized to other periods of time

Ecological Validity

The extent to which the research findings can be generalised to other settings. If a study has mundane realism it may have ecological validity, but if the setting of the study is very specific it might not be possible to generalise to other settings

Assessing External Validity

To assess the external validity of a study mundane realism, experimental realism, where it took place, the sample of a study and when it took place should all be considered.

Improving External Validity

Finding the questions not performing correctly and changing them

Reliability

It if it 'Consistent'

Reseacher Reliability

More than one researcher conducting the experiment and gathering evidence the same way. Researcher reliability will come from if the results are the same.

Inter rater reliability

Observation based. Whether two or more observers agree with each other, if so they record exactly the same data

Assessing Researcher Reliabiltiy

comparing the scores of the results to see if they agree, possibly doing a correlation depending on the type of results

Improving researcher reliability

Pilot the study and detailed standardised instructions should be written to ensure consistency.

Careful training of researchers
