What is a moment?

The turning effect of a force is called it's moment.

What is the equation used to measure the size of the moment?

M = f × d

M = moment of the force, newton - metres (Nm)

f = force, newtons (N)

d = perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the pivot, metres (m)

You can increase the moment by...

-increasing the force

-increasing the distance to the pivot

M = f × d

It is easier to undo a wheel-nut by:

-Using a long spanner

-Using a short spanner

And why?

-the long spanner because it increases the distance between the line of action of the force and the pivot.
