3268(b) use of force policy
DAI to use minimal reliance on the use of force.
Employees may use reasonable force as required in the performance of there duties. They may not use unnecessary or excessive force.

Reasonable use of force
Reasonable force is the force that an objective, trained and competent correctional employee, faced with similar facts and circumstances, would consider necessary and reasonable to: subdue an attacker, overcome resistance, effect custody, gain compliance with a lawful order.
Unnecessary force
Unnecessary force is the force when none is required or appropriate.
Excessive force
Excessive force is the use of more force than is objectively reasonable to accomplish a lawful purpose.
Immediate use of force
Is to respond without delay to inmate behavior that constitutes an imminent threat to institution/facility security or the safety of persons. Employees may use immediate force without prior authorization from a higher official.
Controlled use of force
Is the force used in a institution / facility setting. Use of force require the authorization from the 1st or 2nd level manager or the AOD.
Non-conventional force
The force that utilizes techniques or instruments that are not specifically authorized in policy, procedures or training.
Non-deadly force
Is any force used that is not likely to result in death.
Deadly force
Is any force used that is likely to result in death. Any discharge of a firearm.
Use of force options. Tools used by an officer.

3 Controlled use of force
Requirements.
•1st or 2nd manager needs to be approved and present or a AOD on non business hours.
•The incident commander shall supervise the controlled use of force.
•A controlled use of force shall not be accomplished without a physical health care staff.
Controlled use of force
The verbal warning shall contain the 5 elements.
•address the inmate by name.
•advise the inmate they are being video recorded.
•order the inmate to voluntarily comply.
•Advise the inmate of OC spray and physical force.
•advise the inmate that sufficient force will be used to remove him from the area.
Deadly force
The 4 situations in which deadly force can be used.
1-To defend the employee from an immediate threat of death or great bodily injury.
2-to prevent an escape from custody.
3-to stop acts such as arson or riots that constitute an immediate jeopardy to institutional security or escapes.
4-to dispose of seriously injured or dangerous animals when no other disposition is practical.
When should a use of force be reported.
Every use of force needs to be reported.
You observe an employee using unnecessary of excessive force. What should you do.
Make every effort possible to stop the excessive use of force.
You become aware of an allegation of unnecessary or excessive use of force. What should you do.
Verbally report the allegation as soon as possible and write a report after.
