canine catheters

Tieman's
Foley
- Latex foley
- Silicone foley

plastic dog catheter

Feline catheters

Conventional
Jackson
Slippery Sam - teflon tomcat

Mila - tomcat

Tiemans catheter

designed for use in human males
popular to catheterise the bitch dueto the curved tip
Catheter is fairly soft and long which makesplacement difficult
Not for use as indwelling

side arm

side arm

Foley catheter

balloon incorporated which is inflatedwith sterile water/saline to create an indwelling urinary catheter (the balloonsits inside the bladder holding the catheter in place)
The “side-arm” of the catheter has a one-wayvalve which is where the sterile water/saline is injected to inflate theballoon

attach to a closed collection system or bunged for frequent manual emptying

latex foley

cannot be re-used, the balloon is weakenedafter one use
very flexible, providinggood patient comfort but are difficult to place, a sterile metal stylet may beused to aid placement
not be lubricated withpetroleum-based lubricants – damages the rubber increasing the chances of theballoon rupturing on inflation

silicone foley catheter

use in both male and female dogs due to length
Catheter is very flexible but will advance upmale urethra, guide-wire stylets are available to aid placement
Silicone is inert thus causes no mucosalirritation Can use all lubricants with silicone catheters

plastic dog catheter

male and female

rounded tip with two drainage holes
single use
choose largest gauge for patient to prevent urination around the catheter also if too small, can cause discomfort and trauma to urthera
firm catheter for easier placement

conventional catheters

male and female cats
straight catheters, compatible with all lubricants, smaller version of plastic dog catheter

jackson catheter

male cats suffering from FLUTD

two lateral oval drainage holes at the tip

metal stylet gives rigidity - control for placement and displaces any loose obstruction
shorter than other cat catheters

SlipperySam – Teflon tomcat catheter

Simple catheter – one hole at the end of thecatheter
Very smooth catheter allowing ease of placement
Inert material causing no mucosal irritation –good for long term indwelling catheter· Suture holes in silicone hub to allow it to besecured
Disadvantage is that the ‘hub’ is notpermanently attached to the tube of the catheter allowing them to occasionallyseparate

mila - tomcat catheter

the best tomcat catheter

non irritating material that is rigid for insertation but softens indwelling
movable suture wing to allow for legth adjustment
one hole at the end of the catheter
guide wire can be used for aid in placement

closed urinary systems

closed urinary systems

monitoring the patients urinary output
manual expression can be used

monitoring the patients urinary output

manual expression can be used

additional care for closed collection system

kinks/holes/damage

Ensure collection bag remains below height ofbladder to prevent backflow of urine
Empty and measure the amount of urine producedregularly to ensure adequate hydration and that the bag does not become toofull.
Wearing gloves, the entire line, from catheterto bag needs to be cleaned with chlorhexidine gluconate (hibi scrub) twice aday
The patient should have ample room in thekennel and the attachment should allow movement and not get snagged to preventpulling on the catheter, this could cause damage to the patient
May be necessary to bandage the collectiontubing to the tail or down the leg to prevent faecal contamination

open system

leave UT open to bacterial contamination and urine scalding of the patient

care for an open system

Absorbent bedding, with incontinence pads toabsorb the drips of urine
Bedding needs to be changed/replacement incopads on a regular basis – check patient every few hours
Area around prepuce/vulva needs to be clippedand barrier cream applied. Clean this area at each check, wearing gloves at alltimes and monitor patient for sores developing Bed bath patient regularly to keep clean, prevent sores developing and reduce depression in patient

what is the normal urine output?

1-2ml/kg/hr

urine output calculation

mls ofurine ÷ weight ÷ hours = mls/kg/hr
