Homologous chromosomes/Homologues
The two copies of each autosome, one from each parent, found in non-reproductive cells. -Homologues are the same size, shape and carry genes for the same traits.
Chromatid
The two identical halves of a chromosome.
-These form as DNA is copied before cell division
Centromere
The constricted area of each chromatid which holds 2 chromatids together
Chromatin
The less tightly coiled DNA-protein complex that exists between cell divisions.
- Assumes this format so that information can be easily read in order to direct cell activities
Karyotype
Photomicrograph of chromosomes in a dividing cell.
