What was Roosevelt's attitude toward American Imperialism?

What were the four conditions of the Treaty of Versailles (for Germany)?
1. Germany had to take full responsibility for World War I (War Guilt Clause).
2. Germany had to pay 31 billion in reparations to the allies.
3. Germany had to severely reduce their army to 100,000 men and leave all weapons in France.
4. Germany had to give up some of their territory.
Isolationism
The belief of US citizens that it was not in the best interest of the US to acquire and exercise control over foreign territories. They felt that the US should only be focused on domestic concerns (issues occurring in the US).
Pacific Region Expansionism (How did the US expand into the Pacific Region?)
Purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. Annexed Hawaii 30 years later. The US believed acquiring this territory would help open trade routes across the Pacific.
Why the annexation of Hawaii important?
It was home to Pearl Harbor (a potentially important naval base) and it was important economically for trade.
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
Prohibited further immigration from China for ten years.
What happened that led the US to pass the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882?
US citizens resented the cheap labor that Chinese immigrants offered.
Americans had to compete with the Chinese for jobs.
Racism and acts of violence against Chinese immigrants increased.
Spanish-American War

War fought between the US and Spain in Cuba and the Philllipines. Resulted in Cuba's independence as well as the US annexing Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines.

Filipinos under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo launched a resistance movement against any US occupation.
Used guerilla warfare to combat the superior strength of the US.
The US captured Aguinaldo in 1901 and in 1902 the Philippines became an “unorganized territory” of the US. In 1946 the Philippines officially gained independence.
USS Maine
US battleship that exploded in a Cuban harbor and resulted in the Spanish-American War.
Teller Amendment
Attached to Congress' 1898 war resolution with Spain.
Promised that the US would allow Cuba to be independent and not annex the territory.
Platt Amendment
Put limits on what the Cuban government could do.
Gave the US two naval bases in Cuba.
Allowed for US intervention in the region whenever the US believed it was necessary.
Emilio Aguinaldo
Lead the Filipinos in a resistance movement against any US occupation.
Panama Canal
Built by the US in Panama.
Allowed US ships to travel back and forth between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans without having to go around South America.
Roosevelt Corollary

Statement issued by Theodore Roosevelt which expanded upon the Monroe Doctrine.
Stated that the US had the right to intervene in the region if a nation had trouble paying its debts.
Roosevelt wanted to make sure that imperialist nations did not use debt collection as an excuse to occupy territories in the Carribean or Latin America.
