Thiazolidinediones

Action of Biguanides (Metformin)

Increase insulin sensitivity (causing glucose to store as glycogen in the liver)


Increase glucose uptake in tissues


Inhibits the breakdown of glycogen into glucose (so that glucose isn't released into the blood)

Liver and renal dysfunction

GI upset

Stimulate the B cells in the pancreas to secrete insulin
