What is the difference between kinetic energy and potential energy? |
Kinetic energy: energy possessed by moving things. More mass and more velocity result in greater kinetic energy. Potential energy: energy that is stored or held in readiness |
|
Energy |
Ability to do work, transfer heat, or cause change. Work is the transfer of energy. Ex. Tennis racquet transfers energy to tennis ball. Measured in Joules ( J ) |
|
Work |
When you exert a force on the object causes the object to move some distance. Work = Force x Distance Units of Work: N*m |
|
Power |
The rate at which work is done or the amount of work done in a unit of time. Units for Power: J/s and Watts |
|
Mechanical Energy |
The sum of kinetic and potential energy of the objects in a system. (usually things with moving parts like a bike or a swing) |
|
Thermal Energy |
Total (sum) energy of particles of an object. The warmer a substance, the greater the thermal energy. |
