What is the difference between kinetic energy and potential energy?

Kinetic energy: energy possessed by moving things. More mass and more velocity result in greater kinetic energy.

Potential energy: energy that is stored or held in readiness

Energy

Ability to do work, transfer heat, or cause change.

Work is the transfer of energy.

Ex. Tennis racquet transfers energy to tennis ball.

Measured in Joules ( J )

Work

When you exert a force on the object causes the object to move some distance.

Work = Force x Distance

Units of Work: N*m

Power

The rate at which work is done or the amount of work done in a unit of time.

Units for Power: J/s and Watts

Mechanical Energy

The sum of kinetic and potential energy of the objects in a system.

(usually things with moving parts like a bike or a swing)

Thermal Energy

Total (sum) energy of particles of an object.

The warmer a substance, the greater the thermal energy.
