the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and deversified from earlier forms during the histiry of the earth

Relative dating

is the science of determining the relative order of past events without neccesarily determining their absolute age

Radioactive dating

is a technique used to date materials such as rocks or carbon, in which trace radioactive impurities were selectively incorporated when they formed

Comparaitive anatomy

is the study of similarites and differences in the anatomy of different species

Homologous structures

is an example of an organ or bone that appears in different animals, underlining anatomical commonalities demonstrating descent from a common ancestor

Analogous structures

pertain to the various structures in different species having the same apperance, structure or functionbut have evolved seperatly, but the don't share a common ancestor.

Vestigial structures

a structure in an organism that has lost all or most of its origianl function in the course of evolution, such as human appendixes

Comparative embryology

is the branch of embryology that compares and contrasts the embryos of different species

Comparative biochemistry

it is the study of the similarites and differences between different living organisms

Theory of use & disuse

is the idea that an organism can pass on characteristics that it has acquired during its lifetime to its offspring

Inheritance of acquired characteristic

is a hypothesis that physiological change acquired over the life of an organism

Adaptations

the action or process of adapting or being adapted

Natural Selection

the process where by organisms better adapt to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring

Speciation

the formation of new and distinct species in the course of evolution

Genetic recombination

is the production of offspring with combinations of traits that differ from those found in either parent

Immigration

the action of coming to live perminetly in a forgien country

Punctuated equilibrium

the hypothesis that that evolutionary development is marked by isolation episodes of rapid speculation between long periods of little or no change

Industrial melanism

the prevalence of dark-colored varieties of animals in industrial areas where they are better camouflaged against predators than paler forms

Bacterial resistance

is the capacity of bacteria to withstand the effects ofantibiotics or biocides that are intended to kill or control them
