-A nutrient is a component of food needed for the body to function -It is essential if the body cannot produce it in sufficient quantity on its own -Organic means it's produced by a living thing. All organic materials contain carbon. -Macronutrients: Water, carbohydrates(organic & yields E: 4kcal/g), protein(organic & yields E: 4kcal/g), lipids(organic & yields E:9kcal/g); Micronutrients: vitamins(organic), most minerals - Malnutrition is when there's a nutrient or energy deficiency or excess that results in a health condition |

History: assessment of diet, medical hisotry, socioeconomic history Anthropoteric measures: height, weight Physical exam: looks for clues of poor nutritional health status in hair, eyes, skin, tongue, nails, posture Laboratory tests: blood& urine to pick up on more subtle changes. |

explain the uses and limitations of food composition databases. |
Food composition tables tell the reader what nutrients their food is made up of and in what quantities. The energy provided can be calculated with these values. Limitations include: -The nutrient content of a food is influenced by several factors, many of which food composition tables are not able to account for, therefore they are only estimations. (In addition to method of cooking the nutrient content is influenced by: variety or strain of food; geographic location and season of production; The mineral content of the soil & fertilizer used; The stage of maturity at harvest-the method of processing;The method & length of time of storage) -Several nutrients are not included in these tables -Whole amount of nutrient not necessarily absorbed by body -certain food products vary by country due to legislation on enrichment |
