VIC - How do you tell a home/absolute from an auto/permissive?

A Home's lights are all in line vertically.

An Auto's light are staggered diagonally. (Left to Right Down = Normal Stagger).

VIC - How do you tell a 3 Position and a 2 Position signal apart?

A 3P has 2 large vertical or diagonal lights on the same post to display it's indication.

All 2 position signals use a single light to display their indication. If 2 are positioned on the same post they will be horizontal to each other.

Caution Turnout - Points are set for turnout route, line ahead is clear to the next fixed signal which may be at stop.

NSW - In Single Light Colour Light signalling what indication is two Red lights over a smaller green light and what does it mean?

Low Speed - Line ahead is clear until the next fixed signal which may be at stop. Signal may apply to any route protected by the signal, driver must be prepared for any turnout speed and prepared to stop by the next fixed signal.

Note - Close up signal if "close up" is displayed over green light. Same rules apply, means train is still on overlap of next signal.

NSW - In Single Light Colour Light signalling what indication is two Red lights over a smaller yellow light and what does it mean?

Shunt Signal - Authorises shunt movement on Running lines or sidings. Points are set for the move, line may be occupied and next fixed signal at stop. Driver to proceed Restricted Speed.

NSW - In Single Light Colour Light signalling what indication is two red lights over a smaller pulsating yellow light and what does it mean?

Shunt Ahead Signal - Authorizes a shunt movement past the signal to Shunt/Yard Limits, NOT an authority to proceed through the Section.

NSW - In Single Light Colour Light signalling what is a small signal only able to display two horizontal reds or one yellow light and what does it mean?

Shunting Signals - Display either stop or proceed. Proceed at restricted speed prepared to find line occupied and next fixed signal at stop.

Culcairn South Loop & Junee Yard

VIC & NSW - What is the function of banner indicators?

Same in NSW & VIC, gives an early indication of a signal aspect, generally for signals with reduced visibility.

NSW - In Single Light Colour Light what is the funtion of Distant Signals?

To give an early indication of the indication on the following absolute or permissive signal. Distant signals cannot display STOP, only clear, caution or medium.

If a distant is defective marker light will be yellow.

VIC & NSW - If any signal shows an illegal or incomplete indication what should be done?

Stop. Inform NCO.

Repeater gives an early indication of the next fixed signal indication. Generally found between 2 position and 3 position signalling.

Yellow over Yellow - Warning, next signal may be at stop.

Green over Yellow - Proceed, next signal will have a proceed aspect.

Note - Found at Frankston.

May also display Reduce to Medium is some locations (not any we use)

General - In electrically interlocked areas what may prevent a signal being able to display a proceed aspect?

Defective points, points in hand position, switch locked siding not set correctly, broken rail, conductive substance on rail, broken rail connecting wires, defective signal.

General - How does a track circuit work?

An electrical current flows through the rails forming a circuit. If the circuit is uninterrupted the fixed signal can be placed at proceed. Using a relay and switch when the track is unoccupied the switch is closed completing the curcuit, when interupted the switch is opened disrupting the circuit.

VIC - Semaphore Signals, how do 2 position & 3 position semaphores show their aspects?
