What must be confirmed before putting yourself in the line of fire between roll stock? |
That the movement is safe, protected by 3 step protection if attached to Locomotive or secured. |
What is 3 step protection? |
Reverser Centered, Brake Applied, Genfield switch off. |
Also known as "made safe". |
What is the '10 second rule'? |
When proceeding a shunt movement transmission must be made every 10 seconds maximum or driver will apply brakes until communication is resumed. |
When coupling what measurements are normally used? |
Locomotive Lengths, to 40/30/20/10/5/4/3/2/1 feet. |
What phrase is used instead of Stop? |
"Red Light" |
How are locmotives coupled together? |
Check knuckles have engaged. Brake Pipe, Main Res, No 3 & No 4 hoses connected and air through. MU cable connected. |
Which of the 4 locomotive air hoses is used to connect to wagons? |
Brake Pipe Hose (Largest) |
When uncoupling from wagons how are wagons secured? |
Leave tap open on wagon BP hose to drain air when uncoupled, close tap. Handbrakes applied, generally 4 to secure rake more if on a grade. |
When air hoses are coupled between locos and/or wagons if a leak is heard what should be done? |
Investigate source, if air hoses close taps, check seals and try again,if still leaking hoses may need to be replaced. |
When proppeling a movement over a road crossing what needs to be done? |
Crossing needs to be protected before leading vehicle enters crossing. Active crossings need all warning equipment activated and booms down, passive crossing need to be physically protected. |
When propelling a movement what needs paying attention to by the shunter besides the movement of wagons? |
Signals, Shunt Limits, crossings, points, derailers, workers in the area. |
What are the driver and shunter responsible for when signals are involved with shunting? |
Driver - Responsible for obeying signals when pulling wagons. When Proppeling must ensure shunter calls signal aspects before proceeding. Shunter - Responsible for sighting and calling any signals on the shunt route when movement is being propelled. |
When proceding a shunting movement what information is relayed to the driver? |
Signal is at procede with correct aspect, Points are set, status of road (occupied, clear, dead end, derailer on/off), any crossings are protected, shunter has physincally sighted route and can confirm all clear or how far to travel until coupling or stopping point. Also helpful to give a rough idea how many wagons are on and plans for the shunting move. |
What should be checked after en-route shunting? |
Check consist is correct. Check Brake docket is correct if new wagons are in last 3 wagons. Conduct Modified or full continuity & leakage test. Calculate &/or Confirm new load details. Inform control of new load & permission to depart. Roll By by Shunter (if possible). |
What is important to check if Shunting a locomotive out of a multi-unit consist? |
That park brake is applied before disconnecting MU Cable. Chock once uncoupled. |
When there may be multiple person/s monitoring a channel what must you do when commencing a shunt? |
Clearly identify who you are communicating with. Use loco number or train number and driver's name if known. |
What are the whitsle codes for moving ahead and setting back? |
Move ahead - 2 short sharp blasts Setting Back - 3 short sharp blasts |
What air brake requirements must be met before pushing vehicles/rollstock on to a running line? |
- Air continuous throughout train. - Air brake on leading vehicle must be tested operative. - The handbrake on lead vehicle must be operative. - No more than 2 wagons with inoperative air brakes may be marshalled together. |
When is it permitted to ride a vehicle when shunting? |
Under no circumstances unless there is a purpose built shunters wagon and you have been trained/qualified to use it. Note - Long Island junk rake has one for tottenham transfer. |
When shunting over a level crossing what must be done? |
The crossing is protected. Either by bells, lights and booms or by the shunter for a passive crossing. |
When shunting toward a known signal, derailer or fouled location what should be done if the Shunter hasn't acknowledged it? |
Ask. The signal aspect, derailer on/off, distance away etc. |
Describe the term "bottling the air". |
Not allowing brake pipe pressure to exhaust enough from wagons being uncoupled. Can cause a "wave" through the train which initiates the triple vavles to release the brakes. |
When shunting towards a dead end what must be done? |
Stop movement 2 loco lengths short of dead end, proceed with extreme caution. |
What is the speed for propelling over a road crossing in NSW? |
Maximum 10kmph, only proceed if protected. |
