The first two men Atticus defended were the last two men to be hanged in Maycomb. They did not take his advice and plead innocent. They were found guilty and executed.

The Radley Place was always a topic of conversation. Why were the Radleys considered with fear and superstition?

The Radleys didn’t mix with the other people of Maycomb. Also, no one ever sees Boo.

What is the setting of this novel?

This novel covers three years during the Great Depression (1930s), in Maycomb, Alabama.

Scout begins school. What was the cause of disagreement between Scout and her teacher, Miss Caroline Fisher?

Scout could read and write cursive. Later, she talks back to Miss Caroline while defending Walter Cunningham, and gets in trouble.

Scout says of Walter Cunningham - “You’re shamin’ him, Miss Caroline”. Why wouldn’t Walter accept a quarter from Miss Caroline?

Walter knew he would not be able to pay it back.

Miss Caroline saw a cootie (lice) in Burris Ewell’s hair. She asks him to go home and wash, but he responds, very rudely, that when he goes home, he won't be coming back. The Ewells are very poor and dirty, and the children only go to school on the first day.

What kind of people were the Ewells?

The Ewells are poor and dirty. The many children only go to school on the first day every year. They are belligerent, hostile and unfriendly.

What arrangement did Atticus and Scout make concerning Scout’s reading and Miss Caroline, the teacher?

Atticus said he and Scout would read every night without telling Miss Caroline, and Scout will continue to go to school.

Jem and Scout made an interesting discovery. Objects are left periodically in a hole in a live oak tree near the Radley Place. What do they find?

They find two pieces of Wrigley’s Doublemint gum, then later on a whole package, a wedding box with two shiny indian head pennies inside, a ball of grey twine, two bars of soap carved to look like Scout and Jem, a spelling bee medal and a pocket watch on a chain.

What were “Hot Steams”?

When someone can't go to Heaven, they become “Hot Steams”. If you walk through one, you become one unless you say “Angel-Bright, life-in-death; get off the road, don’t suck my breath”. … Really, it’s just a patch of fog.

When Scout was in the tire and hit the Radley porch, she heard someone laughing inside.

He was not serious. It was an old routine they had; they were childhood friends. (He wanted to “get her goat”, an expression meaning he wanted to bother or irritate her.)

Why did Miss Maudie think Boo was probably alive?

She hadn’t seen Boo be brought out in a coffin.

Miss Maudie suggests a reason for the Radleys staying close to home. What is it?

She says the Radleys are “foot-washing Baptists”, meaning very strict, devout Baptists who don't believe in experiencing pleasure in anything. The Radleys stay in their house to maintain a ‘clean soul’?

Jem, Dill and Scout tried to see in the windows of the Radley Place and were caught. What happened to Jem?

Jem’s pants got caught in the fence. When someone shoots at them, he wriggles out and leaves the pants there.

Why were the neighbours gathered in front of the Radley Place?

The neighbours heard the gunshot and wanted to know what happened. Miss Maudie says that Nathan Radley shot (in the air) at a coloured man in his yard. When Atticus noticed that Jem has no pants, Dill said it’s because they were playing strip poker with matches and Jem lost.

Jem returned for his pants. What discovery did he make at that time? Can we attach any significance to this?

Jem’s pants were (badly) sewn and folded up. It was almost as if a child had done it; we can assume that Boo sewed them.

The gifts left in the knot hole of the live oak suddenly stop. Why?

Mr. Nathan Radley filled the hole with cement. Jem realizes that Boo was probably the one leaving the gifts and Nathan wanted to stop it.

NOTE: This is representative of the loss of childhood innocence.

Scout, being human, could not always hold her temper, consequently split a knuckle when she hit Francis. While talking to Uncle Jack, how did Atticus justify Scout’s action?

Atticus told Uncle Jack that he should have asked Scout why she decided to punch Francis before punishing her. “You had the right answer this afternoon but for the wrong reason.” He also said that swearing is a stage and that she is trying her best.

Jem and Scout receive air rifles as gifts. With the gifts they receive a caution. What was it?

It is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Scout and Jem can shoot at the bluejays all they want, but they cannot shoot a mockingbird. Miss Maudie agrees and says that all mockingbirds do is to create music for us to enjoy, and should not be killed.

NOTE: this is one of the main metaphors in the novel.
