General Tissue Components |
Cells and Matrix |
4 Primary Classes of Tissue |
Epithelial, Muscle, Nervous,and Connective. |
3 Embryological Layers |
Endoderm, Mesoderm, Exoderm. |
Matrix Components |
fiber and tissue substance |
Types of Muscle Tissue |
Skeletal Smooth Cardiac |
Skeletal |
Shape: Cylindrical Fibrous Multiple Nuclei Striated Conscious Control |
Smooth Muscle |
Shape: Spindle- Shaped One Nucleus smooth Involuntary Surrounds hollow organs and blood vessels. |
Cardiac |
Shape: Branched. Generally One Nucleus Striated Involuntary Control Heart. |
Components of a Neuron |
Soma Dendrites Axon |
Soma |
The cell body that contains the nucleus. |
Dendrites |
Bring stimulation to the cell. |
Axon |
Carries impulses from one neuron to another. |
General Characteristics of Epithelium |
Basement Membrane (basal surface) Highly Cellular Avascular Highly mitotic Accompanied by connective tissue. |
Epithelial Connections |
Tight Junction Desmosomes Gap/Communicating Junctions |
Tight Junction |
Protects against invaders. Ensures Nutrients. |
Desmosomes |
Very strong. Holds cells together. |
Cilia |
Epithelial extension on the apical side of a cell and have microfilaments, |
Functions of Epithelium |
Protection Diffusion Absorption Secretion Filtration |
Simple Squamous Epithelium |
Responsible for diffusion and filtration. Is wider than it is tall. Found in the alveoli of the lungs, the linings of blood vessels, lining of the heart, glomerulus of kidney nephron, lining of body cavities, and lining of ventral body oragns. |
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium |
Primarily functions to secrete and absorb. Generally looks as wide as it is tall. Found in kidney tubules, small glands, reproductive organs, terminal bronchiole linings, and in the choroid plexi. |
Ciliated Simple Columnar Epithelium |
Secretion, absorption, and propulsion Found in small bronchi, bronchioles, bile ducts, ventricles of the brain, and uterine tubes. |
Non-Ciliated Simple Columnar Epithelium |
Found in gastrointestinal tract, gall bladder, and excretory ducts. Main functions are to secrete and absorb. |
Ciliated Peudostratified Columnar Epithelium |
Function is to secrete. Found in the trachea and most of the upper repertory tract. |
Non-Ciliated Peudostratified Columnar Epithelium |
Secretion is its function. Found in ducts of large glands and sperm carry ducts. |
Stratified Squamous Epithelium |
Works to protect. Keratinized ones are found in skin. Non-Keratinized are found in the mouth, esophagus, cornea, rectum/anus. |
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium |
Secretes. Usually 2 layers thick. Found in salivary glands, sweat glands, and ovarian follicles. |
Transitional Epithelium |
Adapts to the organs that it surrounds. Protects. Found in bladder and uterus. |
