Richard I

Son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Took the cross in November 1187. Great grandson of Fulk de Anjou ,3rd king of Jerusalem. Imposed ruthless economic measures (e.g. Saladin Tithe) on his subjects to raise funds for the crusade. Decided to travel to the near east by sea rather than take the traditional land route.

Philip II

Took the cross with Henry II of England in January 1188 at Gisors after the two monarchs heard an impassioned sermon by the Archbishop of Tyre, Joscius. Philip's army was considerably smaller than the Angevin contingent and he was more concerned with matters in France during the crusade.

Frederick Barbarossa

Took the cross at Mainz in March 1188 and left on crusade in May 1189, significantly earlier than both Phillip and Richard. He had previously visited the Holy Land with his uncle, Conrad III, during the second crusade. Barbarossa had by far the largest and most well equipped army of all the crusading leaders. His preeminence and fine leadership ability made him the unofficial figurehead of the third crusade.
