Explain the functions of the kidney

•ultrafiltration- blood travelling at high pressure enters the afferent arteriolar via the arteriolar coming from the renal artery.

•blood enters the glomerulus where all the big bits leave through the efferent arteriolar and small bits like water and glucose enter Bowmans capsule

•selective reabsorption- blood travels to proximal convoluted tube and glucose is reabsorbed here.

•the glomerular filtrate flows through the loop of Henle where osmoregulation occurs. The top of the ascending limb is not permeable to water but na ions are pumped out by active transport making a concentration gradient. The descending limb is permeable to water so water moves out lowering the gradient. But the lower part of the ascending limb pumps out na so changes gradient again. Water moves out of descending limb

•glomerular filtrate travels to distal convoluted tubule where some more reabsorption occurs and then rest of stuff is drained down collecting tube and into ureter

How does antidiuretic hormone control water regulation?

Dehydration:

•low water potential in blood

•osmoreceptors in hypothalamus detect this and send signal to posterior pituitary gland which secrets adh

•adh makes wall of distal convoluted tube more permeable to water so water moves out into blood instead of travelling to collecting duct where it would be wasted

•small amount of concentrated grime produced

Hydration:

•less adh is produced

•wall of dct is less permeable to water so water remains in tubule
