What is the brain made up of?

Billions of interconnected neurones

Name the parts from top arrow downwards

Cerebral cortex

Cerebellum

Medulla

Spinal cord

Cerebral cortex

The outer wrinkly part of the brain. It's responsible for consciouseness, intelligence, memory and language.

Medulla

Controls unconscious actives such as breathing and your heartbeat

Cerebellum

Responsible for muscle coordination

Name the 3 main ways of studying the brain.

brain damage

Studying patient with brain damage Electrically stimulating the brain MRI scans

Electrically stimulating the brain

Studying patients with brain damage

If a small part of the brain has been damaged then the patient can tell you a lot about what the damaged part of the brain does. For example is the patient went blind then the damaged part of the brain has something to do with vision.

Electrically stimulating the brain

By putting a tiny electrode onto the tissue and giving it a small amount of electricity you can observe the result of the stimulation and workout what that part of the brain does. Eg if you stimulate the motor area muscle contraptions would occur.

MRI Scans

A magnetic resonance imaging scanner produces very detailed pictures of the brains structure.

You could find out what part of the brain is active when doing a certain activity such as listening to music.
