thalamic syndrome
caused by damage to Ventral Posterior aspect of the thalamus.
Symptoms: -contralateral loss of propricoception, temp, pain, and touch. -when threshold is reached, the sensation is exegerrated, painful, perverted and disagreeable. (e.g. prick of pin feeels like severe burning sensation, or music that used to be pleasent is now disagreeable). -sometimes spontaneous pain, with forced laughter and crying. |
lesions placed surgically in intralaminar nuclei to control what?
inatractable pain
each area of the cerebral cortex has projections with the thalamus except what two places?
the olfactory and reticular nucleus
what is the function of the reticular nucleus?
to modulate signal exchange between thalamic nuclei and the cerebral cortex.
what are the inputs, outputs, and function of the intralaminar nuclei?
input:reticular formation
output:cerebral cortex function:arousal, consciousness |
what nuclei compose the ventral nuclear group? what their inputs, outputs, and functions?
Ventral Nuclear group:
LG MG VPM VPL Ventral lateral (VLP and VLA) and ventral anterior (VA) Postrior nuclear group medial geniculate - music lateral geniculate - visual field Ventral lateral (VLP and VLA) and ventral anterior (VA) - motor pathways Ventral posterior lateral - somatic sensation from body ventral posterial medial - somatic sensation from head Ventral posterior anterior |
what nuclei compose the lateral nuclear group? what their inputs, outputs, and functions?
what nuclei compose the lateral nuclear group? what their inputs, outputs, and functions? |
lateral nuclear group nuclei:
LD, LP, pulivnar Medial group nuclei: MD, MV, anterior nucleus Lateral and medial nuclei are all involved in the limbic system. |
anterior nucleus is part of the medial group. What are its inputs, outputs, and what overall function it participates in?
input:mamillary bodies
ouput:cingulate gyrus function: memory |
