1. Weaving 2. Knitting 3. Braiding 4. Tufting 5. Non-woven |
What are key fabric quality parameters? |
1. Durability 2. Aesthetics 3. Comfort 4. Care |
What are three primary weaving motions? |
1. Shedding 2. Picking 3. Beating-up |
What are different filling insertion methods? |
1. Shuttle 2. Griper 3. Rapier 4. Water Jet 5. Air Jet |
What are three different shedding devices and which concept led to the discovery of the computer? |
1. Cam 2. Dobby 3. Jacquard The punch card concept for jacquard weaving led to the discovery of the computer. |
What is a harness? What is a heddle? |
Harness- is a frame to hold heddles. Heddles- are wires with an eye at the center through which a warp end is threaded. |
What are three basic weaves? |
1. Plain weave 2. Twill weave 3. Satin weave |
What is a basket weave? |
Basket weave- are made with two or more adjacent warps controlled by the same harness and two or more fillings are introduced into the same shed. |
What is a satin design? |
It is produced by long floats of either warp or weft to provide a smooth and lustrous appearance. |
What is a balanced weave? |
A balanced weave has the same number of warp or weft per inch in the fabric and also the same yarn count. |
What is a rib fabric? |
Rib fabric is produced by using heavier yarn count either in the warp or weft direction |
To create complicated designs that requires more than 40 harness, what shedding device should you use? |
A jacquard device needs to be attached to the loom. |
What are two auxiliary motions of weaving? |
1. Let-off mechanism 2. Take-up mechanism |
Name two shuttle-less weaving machines? |
1. Air-jet machines 2. Projectile machines |
What is knitting? |
It is the formation of fabric by the interloping one or more sets of yarns. |
What are two main types of knitting? |
1. Weft knitting 2. Warp knitting |
What are the names of the horizontal and vertical stitches in the knitted fabric? |
Horizontal stitches are courses. Vertical stitches are wales. |
Why does a sweater stretch more than jeans? |
A sweater is less tightly woven with thicker strands and a different construction method. Denim is a heavier material. The weft length is stretchier than the warp. |
What is a warp knit fabric? |
Warp knit fabric is formed by a warp into looped fabric. Each yarn in the warp is linked to a vertical or diagonal row of loops. These interlace with those of adjacent rows to produce fabric. |
Between a warp knit and a weft knit fabric, which will have more stretch and why? |
Weft knit is stretchier because in the weft knit structure looped yarns are freer to extend when it is stretched. |
What are the four basic weft knit stitches? |
1. Knit stitch 2. Tuck stitch 3. Float/miss stitch 4. Purl/reverse stitch |
Identify the following fabric as warp or weft knit? |
Lisle= weft Tricot= warp Interlock= weft |
What is a jersey? |
It is light to heavy weight fabric produced on circular knitting machine in tubular form. |
What is the cut of a knitting machine? |
Cut indicates fineness of the stitch and is expressed as needles per inch in a weft knitting machine. |
What is the technical face of a weft knit fabric? |
It is over side of the fabric as knitted. This may not be the same side as the fashion side. |
What weight of the fabrics classify light, medium, and heavy? |
Light- less than 3 ounces Medium- up to 6 ounces Heavy- above 6 ounces |
What is a pile jersey fabric? |
These are made on modified circular jersey machine. Fabric looks like woven pile but are more flexible and has more stretch. |
What is an interlock fabric? |
This is the simplest double knit fabric which is produced by interlock gating. It is composed of two 1x1 structure inter-meshed. |
What are four steps of producing non-woven fabrics? |
1. Selection of fibers (raw materials) 2. Web formation 3. Consolidation 4. Finishing and conversion |
What are two web production methods? |
1. Dry laid 2. Wet laid |
Name four web consolidation methods? |
1. Needle Punch 2. Hydro-entanglement 3. Thermo-bonding 4. Chemical bonding |
