Race
A socially constructed category of people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of a society consider important.
Ethnicity
A shared culture heritage. Religion, language, Homeland.
Minority
Identified by race, or ethnic group.
Prejudice
A regid and unfair generalization about an entire category of people.
Stereotype
a simplified description applied to every person in some category.
(prejudice often takes the form of a stereotype)
Discrimination
Unequal treatment of various categories of people. (Discrimination is closely related to prejudice)
Racism
the belief that one racial category is innately superior or inferior to another.

Four Theories of Prejudice
Scapegoat, Authoritarian Personality, Cultural, Conflict
Scapegoat Theory
the idea that prejudice comes from frustration among people who are disadvantaged.
Authoritarian Personality Theory
The idea that being prejudice is a Personality Trait. An Authoritarian Personality is formed because of little education or by being raised that way by their parents.
Cultural Theory
the idea that prejudice is rooted by and part of culture.
Conflict Theory
a tool used by powerful people to divide and control the population

Pluralism, Assimilation, Segregation, Genocide
Pluralism
A state in which people of all races are distinct but have equal social standing.
Assimilation
the process by which minorities gradually adopt pattens of the dominant culture.
Segregation
The physical and social separation of categories of people.
Genocide
The systematic killing of one category people by another.
