What bone is the osteon associated with?

What is the trabeculae associated with?

Spongy bone

What is the importance of the articular cartilage ?

It's between the bone, prevents friction of bones rubbing against each other.

Osteoclasts

Breaks down bone and allows calcium to go into the blood system.

Osteoblasts

Takes excess calcium in blood system and stores it in the skeletal system.

Osteocytes

Maintains the bony matrix

What determines if the bone is going to grow?

Presence of the epiphyseal plate

What is the intramembranous ossification?

Sheets of connective tissue replaced by bone.

What is the endochondrial ossification ?

Hyaline cartilage gets replaced by bone

What is the epiphyseal plate

The growth plate

What are the functions of the skeletal system ?

Support, protect organs and blood cell production

What are the Atlas and the axis ?

C1 and C2

What are the primary curves?

Socral/pelvic and thoracic. You are born with them.

What are the secondary curves?

What is the acetabulum ?

The cup that receives the head of the femur

What are the 2 types of bones?

Osteon - compact bone

Synarthrotic

(Fibrous joints) immovable ex-sutures of the skull

Amphiarthrotic

(Cartilaginous joints) slightly movable ex- symphysis

Diararthrotic

(Synovial joints) freely movable ex- most bones in the body

What are fontanels and why are they important ?

Soft spots and open areas of the skull that have not fused yet. Compression of the skull allows passing through birth canal and expansion of the skull allows the brain to grow.

What are the ends of the bone called?

The epiphysis

What is the shaft of the bone called ?

The diaphysis

Compound fracture/ open fracture

Bone is broken and also cuts through the skin

Simple fracture/ closed fracture

Bone does not go through the skin

Greenstick fracture

Incomplete

Comminuted fracture

Shattered bones

Hinge joint

The convex surface of one bone fits into the concave surface of another example elbow and joints of phalanges

Ball and socket

Ball shaped head of one articulates with cup shaped socket of another example shoulder, hip
