Apse, Apsidal

A large semicircular or polygonal (and usually vaulted) niche protruding from the end of a building

Arcadr

A series of arches, carried by column or piers and supporting a common wall or lintel



- in a blind arcade, the arches and supports are engaged (attached to the wall) and have a decorative function

Barrel Vault

An elongated or continuous semicircular vault, shaped like a half- cylinder

The central space of a basilica, two or three stories high and usually flanked by aisles

Plinth

The slab like base or pedestal of a column, statue, wall, building, or piece or furniture.

Any building (or part thereof) constructed in a circular (or sometimes polygonal) shape, usually producing a large open space crowned by a dome

In architecture, an arch that displaces most of its weight, or downward thrust along its curving sides, transmitting that weight to adjacent supporting uprights

Four-man rule, as in the late Roman Empire, when four emperors shared power

A system of proportions in Classical architecture that includes ever aspect of the building's plan, elevation, and decorative system. A variation of Doric characterized by a smooth- surfaced column shaft with a base, a plain architrave, and a undecorated frieze

The oblong, wedge- shaped stone blocks used to build an arch.

An abbey is a religious community headed by an abbot or abbess- especially has a large choir to provide space for the monks or nuns
