What is the difference between Tactical Ventilation and Self (Uncontrolled) Ventilation?

TV - Planned, coordinated and Systematic

SV - failure of windows/doors or other elements of structure resulting from actions of fire.

What is Consequential Ventilation?

Ventilation as a result of Firefighting Operations.

What is the difference between Defensive and Offensive Ventilation?

DV - carried out away from the fire after the fire.

OV - close to fire compartment to have direct affect on fire.

What is Natural Ventilation?

Not assisted by mechanical means - vents, windows, doors

What is Sequential Ventilation?

One room or floor is ventilated after another so an area can be cleared of products of combustion.

What is negative versus positive ventilation?

NV - fan or jet facing out of an opening uses Venturi principle to REDUCE the pressure in the room.

PV - forces air in using fans INCREASING pressure in the room to push smoke out.

Can covering jets be directed into inlets/outlets?

Not unless specifically instructed. Should be used to cool and control escaping products of combustion.

When can fixed instillation be used to clear products of combustion?

On orders of IC (should still seek advice)

Advice from trained personnel

Advice from SFSO

What affects the ICs ventilation plan?

Wind - direction and strength Inlets - upwind (Door). Outlets - downwind (window)

Larger outlets can be considered when the wind is strong and blowing in the right direction.

What should the ventilation pathway include?

Outlet (create 1st). Inlet (create 2nd). Enclosed route - inlet to fire Enclosed route - fire to outlet Covering jets (45mm 230 lpm) charged. Building plans Safety Officers

What Tactical Mode should the Incident be in while crews ventilate?

OSCAR

When can Firefighting and rescue teams be committed to the Ventilation Pathway?

Once VP is secure, stable and working correctly?
