GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME:
-3 stage reaction to stress
-how the body responds to stressors
-triggered either directly by a physical event or indirectly by a psychological event
ALARM REACTION:-
-body functions are heigthened to respond to a stressor (rising hormones levels, INCREASED bld volume, glucose levels, epinephrine & norephinephrine amts, O2 intake, mental alertness, b/p, HR,
-"fight or flight response" (last 1 min to many hours)
-dilated pupils

RESISTANCE STAGE: (2nd)
-body functions normalize while responding to the stressor
1. stabilization 2. hormonal levels return to normal 3. PNS ("rest & digest"/peace) activity
4. adaptation to stressor
EXHAUSTION STAGE:
-body is no longer able to maintain a response to the stressor
1. increase physiological response as noted in the alarm reaction
2. decreased enery levels
3. decreased psychological adaptation
4. death
ACUTE STRESS D/O (ASD):
-begins w/ the person experiencing, witnessing or being confronted w/ the person experiencing, witnessing or being confronted w/ a traumatice event & responding w/ intense fear, helplessness or horror
-sx begin b/w 2 days & 4 wks after trauma

-MVA
-natural disasters
-violent personal assault
-military combat
POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS D/O (PTSD):
-may have a delayed onset longer than 4 wks & persist longer than 1 mth
-some experience Flashbacks

-job relocation
-job changes (promotions, transfers, downsizing,restructuring,

What are ex. of Maturational Factors (developmental stress)?
1. Child: stressor r/t physical appearance, family, friends & school
2. Preadolescents: stress r/t self-esteem, changing family structure (divorce/death of a parent), hospitalizations
3. Adolescents: search for id w/ peer groups, separate from family, face ques about mind-altering subs. sexuality, jobs, school & career choices
4. Adults: beginning a family & career, losing parents, seeing kids leave home, accepting physical aging
5. Old Age: loss of autonomy & mastery due to frailty or health problems that limit stamina & strength
What are ex. of Sociocultural Factors that causes stress?
-substance abuse
-lack of education
-continuing violence
-homeless
-disintegrated neighborhoods
-Child: poverty, physical handicap, divorce, mental illness or imprisonment of parents
COMPLIANCE:
